چکیده

Increasing environmental pressures, pollution and legislation in Europe are creating the urgent need for regional-catchment scale geological models to assess hydrogeological conditions and inform mathematical and numerical groundwater models. Geological models are especially important in areas with superficial deposits overlying key aquifers. These areas are often characterized by very complex arrangements of aquifers and aquitards, having important implications for aquifer protection, flow pathways and recharge potential. The interaction of ground and surface water in valleys is being closely studied following many recent instances of inundation in Europe.

Fundamentals of 3D modelling and resource estimation in coal mining

The prerequisite of maintaining an efficient and safe mining operation is the proper design of a mine by considering all aspects. The first step in a coal mine design is a realistic geometrical modelling of the coal seam(s). The structural features such as faults and folding must be reliably implemented in 3D seam models. Upon having a consistent seam model, the attributes such as calorific val...

Groundwater Modelling: from Geology to Hydrogeology

Three-dimensional mapping has extensively developed in the last decade; geological mapping being the area where these developments are more striking. 3D geological mapping has a myriad of applications in the domains of basin analysis, geophysics, geostatistics, geothermal and energy resources, etc. A parallel domain of development has been three-dimensional groundwater modelling: regional groun...

Quality control of 3D Geological Models using an Attention Model based on Gaze

The Geological Survey of the Netherlands (GSN) produces 3D stochast ic geological models of the upper 50 meters of the Dutch subsurface. The voxel models are regarded essential in answering subsurface questions on, for example, aggregate resources, groundwater flow, land subsidence studies and the planning of large-scale infrastructural works such as tunnels. GeoTOP is the most recent and detai...

Application of Artificial Neural Networks and Support Vector Machines for carbonate pores size estimation from 3D seismic data

This paper proposes a method for the prediction of pore size values in hydrocarbon reservoirs using 3D seismic data. To this end, an actual carbonate oil field in the south-western part ofIranwas selected. Taking real geological conditions into account, different models of reservoir were constructed for a range of viable pore size values.  Seismic surveying was performed next on these models. F...

Approaches for Modelling Transient Unsaturated-saturated Groundwater Flow during and after Construction

Construction of underground research laboratories and geological disposal facilities has a significant transient impact on groundwater flow, leading to a drawdown in the water table and groundwater pressures, and groundwater inflow into shafts, access ways and tunnels accompanied by desaturation of the surrounding rock. Modelling the impact of underground facilities on groundwater flow is impor...
